FAQ

Should I send you an email that says "check out my band" with no information about your band and a link to an MP3 or your site?

NO!!! I get at least 3-4 of these a day. I promise you that I will delete this without ever clicking the link. If you can't put the effort into sending me a copy of your demo VIA REGULAR MAIL with, heaven forbid, a complete press package then why should I bother to put forth an effort to go to your website or MP3 site? I don't like sounding like a jerk, but would you walk into an office with dirty sweatpants and yell "gimme a job"? Probably not.

Does Spook City accept demos?

Sure. We love getting new demos. However, there are a few rules/guidelines to follow:

  • Please send your demo as a CD or Cassette along with lyrics, a bio, contact information, a list of shows played and if possible a photo.
  • Sell yourself to the label. Not to sound like a dick, but with this press kit you have to sell me on how it is worth me investing a whole lot of money out of my pocket into your band, not to mention a heckuva lot of time.
  • Please check your CDs/DVDs/VHS tapes/etc to make sure they work and package them so they don't break in the mail. I would say 1 of every 5 demos is broken or malfunctioning when I get it. That's a 20% chance that I never hear your demo you sent.
  • DO NOT SEND MP3s. I WILL DELETE THEM IN 4 MILLISECONDS!!! With viruses and not always being at the computer, they become a nuisance to deal with.
  • Understand that we receive a lot of demos every week. We are so swamped with other work that we can't reply to every band that sends a demo, but trust us that it gets listened to.

Will Spook City send me review material or advertise in my zine?

Depends. If you are an existing zine, please send us a copy and more than likely we will advertise. We love finding out about new outlets to let kids know about us, so send me a copy of your zine. Ezines, please email me the link to your site and the statistics. Don't forget to include your ad rates and size specs. If you are working on your first issue, we can't send you payments for advertising because more often than not, the zine doesn't come out. It's nothing personal against you or your zine, but we've been burned in the past. If you want to get on our good side and butter us up, please place one of our ads in your zine and send us the issue when it comes out. You can find our ads in the Press section or email me and I can send you one.

How can I help out Spook City Records?

You want to help out Spook City? Awesome! There are a lot of things you can do:

  • This may seem obvious, but buy our releases. We hate being in debt.
  • Word of Mouth. If you like one or more of our bands, tell people about them and tell them about Spook City.
  • Spread the word of Spook City on messageboards.
  • See our bands when they play your town.
  • Put our ads in your zines or our banners on your site. You can download them in the downloads section.
  • Flyer our label or our releases in your area.
Let us know if you do any of these things. We love hearing about people that like us and believe in what we do.

Does Spook City deal direct with stores or sell wholesale?

We would love to. Drop us an email at shawn@spookcityusa.com

How can I contact the bands on Spook City?

Check the bands section of this site. Contact information is available there.

If I live in a poor, war-torn country, will you send me free stuff?

Nope. We can't afford to do that. Sorry.

Do you have a street team?

Yep...drop us a line at info@spookcityusa.com

Should I completely ignore the demo submission guidlines?

You're free to do what you want, but trust me, if you do a half assed job of submitting a demo package, I'll give it a half assed consideration. There are a ton of good bands that are hard-working out there. If you can't work hard on your press kit, why would I think you'd work hard on your album or on touring?
